UN Security Council Addresses Global Concerns on AI’s Impact on Peace and Security

During the meeting, various nations expressed their perspectives on AI. The U.S. deputy ambassador to the UN, Jeffrey DeLaurentis, called for caution in approaching AI and emphasized the importance of collective efforts to address human rights risks related to the technology. China’s UN ambassador, Zhang Jun, referred to AI as a “double-edged sword” and emphasized the need for balanced regulation and a focus on people-centric AI to avoid potential dangers. On the other hand, Russia’s deputy UN ambassador, Dmitry Polyanskiy, questioned the relevance of discussing AI within the Security Council, suggesting that specialized platforms and in-depth scientific discussions are more appropriate for addressing complex AI issues.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres supported the creation of a new UN body dedicated to governing AI, drawing parallels to existing bodies overseeing critical areas like nuclear energy and climate change. Guterres highlighted the serious consequences that both military and non-military applications of AI could have on global peace and security, emphasizing the urgency of a collaborative and comprehensive approach to AI governance.
